Abstract

To understand the high degree of social and environmental conflict that involves the current native communities of the Chaco region in Salta requires an examination in historical perspective of the occupation processes and modes of legal annexation of the indigenous territories carried out from the colony to the republic. The aim of this paper is to provide a long-range view of the configuration processes of territorial conflicts. Therefore, we intend to make an approximation to the historical process of colonization, settlement, and urbanization of the indigenous territories of the Chaco region of the province of Salta, which have been occurring from the 17th century to the present time. For this reason, we will take into account the modalities of colonization and the relationships between the actors involved, combining a historical and socio-anthropological approach, with memories and subjective perceptions of the context of study, in order to build a corpus of knowledge that allows future better understanding in historical perspective, the basis on which the conflicts of the present are constituted.
