From communicative competence to intercultural communicative competence:
Implications for the training of English teachers

In the last decades, English has gained international recognition as a lingua franca, blurring boundaries, accents and cultural stereotypes. English is used in a whole gamut of communicative situations, cutting across genres, themes, aims, and media. In this context, it is interesting to review concepts that for decades have represented the knowledge base of a solid language teaching tradition, so as to revise methodological frameworks according to the new communicative demands. The present article analyzes evolution of this field from the development of the concept of Communicative Competence to the emergence of Intercultural Communicative Competence. Although the linguistic competence domain might present challenges in terms of the objectives pursued in teacher training, the present work highlights that the direction in education is clear: identity reaffirmation through students’ own culture and the acceptance of otherness as an opportunity to enrich their views.
