Terminology management in the specialized translation classroom

Abstract

Advances in terminology do not exempt translators from the difficulties that arise in terminological work; this is even more noticeable in stages of translator training or in combinations of languages and fields for which reference material is scarce. It is well known that terminological products are rarely intended for translators; therefore, the professional must carry out his own research to solve problems with terms that are not adequately included terminological information sources or that appear in them but without adequate contextualization. Based on this, this article presents the implementation of a project led by the Pablo de Olavide University (UPO), Spain, in collaboration with teachers from the Faculty of Languages of the National University of Córdoba (FL-UNC), Argentina. The main objective of the project was for translation and interpreting students to be able to prepare their own working material with a view to solving translation assignments of specialized texts, following methodology adopted for specific research in terminology. Three main stages were planned: the translation of a specialized text without  using one's own resources; the development of a bilingual vocabulary; the translation of specialized texts using the developed resources. The expected impact in the medium term is to contribute to raising students' awareness of the importance of working  with ad hoc created material, as well as promoting the transversality of technology in the training of  translators and fostering the development of interinstitutional collaborations.
